Why Teachers Can't be Ultimately Successful with the Current School Curriculum
Generally, the most productive ventures in life are where we are putting a round peg in a round hole.
The reason these are the most productive is because we aren't wasting time trying to solve a problem that can't be solved using an unusable methodology.
The current school curriculum is the gigantic square peg that can never fit into the round hole of the needs of the student. Biology, geometry and social studies will never be more important than health, money and relationships no matter how many PhD's tell us so.
This is where teachers get caught in the middle between students, parents and administrators. They are the one's on the front lines who have to explain how calculus and trigonometry are going to get their child a job, function better in society or even make them happy.
The sad truth is the curriculum is no one's fault. It's simply the way we've been doing it for a long, long time.
We need to collectively decide the information we want our children to learn so parents, teachers and administrators aren't constantly at odds.
You're not going to hear much complaint about kids getting consistently healthier at school or learning bankable job skills or being able to adeptly conduct themselves in social situations. These are skills that are universally needed and can be learned at school.
Teachers should not be required to be policemen.
But, this is going to be their job until we change the curriculum to get the kids genuinely interested. This means relevant subject matter.
It's important that everyone involved in school is enjoying their day including teachers and administrators.
As adults, we aren't interested in non-relevant busy work. But, we are interested in subjects that excite us. Kids are no different.
Give teachers the assignment of creating functioning adults and turn them loose.
